How Fit Do I Need to Be?
For right now, you simply need to be a in good physical shape, and ready to train to be at the peak of your fitness
by November. Ideally
you will be a strong cyclist, either as a mountain biker or a road
biker. However, if you have strong fitness from another sporting
discipline, you should speak to us about whether your existing
fitness and strength can be adapted for the challenge of La Ruta.
As a rough guide, before you begin the training program, you should
at least be able to ride comfortably at a moderate intensity for 3
hours. Of course, at the start line, in November, you will
need to be at the peak of your physical fitness to ensure you have a
safe and enjoyable race.
If you are unsure about whether you have the fitness to take on the training
required to complete La Ruta, speak to us and together we can assess your abilities.
Do I Need to be an Expert Mountain Biker?
No. La Ruta is a huge physical and mental challenge, and it will certainly help if you are
competent mountain biker, but completing the race does not rely on technical mountain bike
skills.
The riding over the three day race is not overly technically
difficult, as much of the event takes place on dirt roads and four wheel drive tracks. This
is not to say that the course will not be challenge your bike skills, particularly on day two’s
long rocky descent, but completing the race does not require that you have expert bike handling
skills.
If you are a fit road cyclist who has some experience on a mountain bike,
you will be in an excellent position to take on the challenge. Of course, our training camp
is an excellent opportunity for the Peak Life Team Coaches to help you improve your bike handling skills, and to work on any areas
you think could benefit from some instruction.
